The drive east from Antananarivo toward Perinet / Analamazoatra Reserve takes one down a cascading set of 'steps' from the highlands.  The flat regions of those steps are among the main rice growing areas in Madagascar, reminding one of parts of Southeast Asia.  This shouldn't be too surprising since the Malagasy people are, at least in part, descended from people arriving from Indonesia roughly 1500 - 2000 years ago.  The man in the foreground is fishing in a flooded paddy.
